Description
Now, if you're a fan of vintage racing Corvettes, here's the car that could have changed history if it wasn't for the short-sighted GM management of the time. It's the incredible "Lightweight"—the 1963 Corvette Grand Sport. Put together by a team led by Zora-Arkus Duntov, this machine was built to end the embarrassing domination of Carroll Shelby's Cobras and was designed to bring LeMans and other endurance racing victories to Chevrolet. Originally known simply as the “Lightweight”, the Grand Sports weighed in at as little as 1900 lbs. They were intended to run an all-alloy 377 cubic inch small block that could put out in excess of 550 HP. The plan was to build 125 cars as required for Production GT homologation, but GM‘s upper management had decided to adhere to the letter of a 1957 AMA non-racing agreement. After some promising test results and encouraging successes in a few races, management caught wind of the project and cancelled the program when only 5 prototypes of these amazing machines had been constructed. They were ordered destroyed but instead they were quietly sold off to independent teams by the engineering staff insiders and all 5 of these historically important and incredibly valuable cars survive to this day. One can only wonder what might have been if GM management allowed the engineering department to carry on with the racing program and all 125 cars had been built! In this print, I didn't want to do a portrait of any particular one of the 5 existing chassis, but rather a representation of the car at it's development point that was most historically significant. This '63 Grand Sport Blueplanprint will appeal to vintage racers, racing history buffs and all fans of this racing legend of the 60's. The prints look fantastic in your office, den, rec-room, bar, garage or anywhere you want to make a brilliant statement! Check out the different sizes, framing and matting options and even the Metalprint formats, I'm sure you'll find the perfect piece for your place!
