I wanted to do something a bit different with this rhododendron piece as I am continuing to experiment with floral paintings. I wanted a dark background and really wasn't sure what I wanted to accomplish at first with the flower petals. As the painting progressed, they began to define themselves. This painting literally dictated what it was to become on it's own! The original is 10.25"x14" in size and is painted with Rublev 18th century reproduction watercolor paint and Winsor & Newton watercolor paint on Arches 140# cold-pressed paper. The paint really fell into the coarse paper in the background and made for some very unusual texturing.
